HOW TO BE HUMBLE LIKE A SERVANT

In this Quiet-time series, we shall study the various characteristics of humility as exhibited by a servant. In God’s Kingdom, one who serves is positioned at the highest position and is called the greatest (Mathew 20: 27).

 Scripture: Luke 22: 26

“But ye shall not be so: but HE THAT IS GREATEST among you, LET THEM BE AS THE YOUNGER; and he that is chief. AS HE THAT DOTH SERVE”

Luke 22: 26

Humility is to make yourself a servant. Jesus linked humility to being a child or being a servant. The art of being a child and the art of being a servant must be studied and meditated upon as long as we live on this earth. Pride is the invisible and dangerous enemy of all of us. The more successful you are, the more invisible and the more dangerous your pride is. Pride is a specialist at bringing people down. The higher you go, the more attractive you are to the spirit of pride.

It is easy to say to someone, “Be humble” but what exactly should he do to make himself humble? Stop smiling? Wear old clothes? Bow when speaking? Live in an old house? Speak with a soft voice? Speak with a sheepish grin? Say ‘please’ before and after a sentence. ……the best person to ask is Jesus.

1. When you are humble like a servant, you are happy and willing to do menial jobs. When you lose this humility you are no longer willing to do menial jobs.

“When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost”

John 6: 12

“…Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah”

2 Kings 3: 11

When you are humble like a servant you are prepared to do menial jobs. To do menial jobs is to be an attendant, a waiter, a cleaner, a security, a watchman, a factory hand, a secretary, a data officer, a messenger, or an odd-job man. These are all menial jobs.

As you go higher in the Lord, you must not think of yourself as being above any job. You must be prepared to work and toil in any capacity, doing mean and lowly jobs. That means you must be prepared to work in the toilet, in the kitchen or on the construction yard….. you must be ready to do domestic work and not think that anything is degrading, demeaning or ignoble.

The scriptures above show us that the apostles were trained by their serving bread and fish to the multitudes. They were also used to gather the crumbs and leftovers after everyone had eaten. Jesus trained His apostles in humility! He trained them in menial jobs and he trained them in servants.

… There is no work in the house of the Lord that is too low! It is an honour to play an instrument for Jesus! It is an honour to sing in the choir! It is a blessing to have a talent and a gift! Do every available job in the house of the Lord! …. Never grow old of doing menial jobs.
