STRIFE IS THE PROOF OF CARNALITY
STRIFE IS THE PROOF OF CARNALITY
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 3:3
TOPIC: Strife is the Proof of Carnality
“For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife…”
1 Corinthians 3:3
Strife is “bitter sometimes violent conflict or dissension, exertion or contention for superiority” according to the Merriam Webster dictionary. You see, the presence of conflict, discord, disharmony, division, disunity, friction, variance, schism, and the list goes on and on, the presence of these things is a proof of the presence of carnality. The last place anything should be done with strife or through strife is the church. Paul admonishes the church and Philippi to avoid doing anything through strife.
“Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.”
Philippians 2:3
The church should rather be the place lowliness is the cloth that clothes us all as we work for God. Esteeming others above you is the way to avoid strife and demonstrate true humility. Jesus had twelve disciples, and one day this instrument of carnality entered their midst. They began to argue for supremacy;
“And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.”
Luke 22:24
Jesus had to settle the strife with the greatest teaching on the subject of what true greatness is. You see greatness is not what the world says it is; it is what Jesus says it is. Humility and service are the foremost characteristics of a humble person. Humility and service make an individual great.
“And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.”
Luke 22:25-27
Wherever you see strife, envy is not so far away. Envy gives birth to strife. The mother of strife is envy, therefore believers are constantly admonished to avoid this deadly twin evil.
“Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.”
Romans 13:13
