UNFEIGNED FAITH IS FEARFUL
UNFEIGNED FAITH IS FEARFUL
Scripture: Romans 3:11-18
Topic: Unfeigned Faith Is Fearful
“There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: Their feet are swift to shed blood: Destruction and misery are in their ways: And the way of peace have they not known: There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
Romans 3:11-18
Persons who do not fear God have never ever repented. In Romans 3:18, the unrepentant are spoken of as having no fear of God. There is the fear of man, and then there is the fear of God. Too much fear of man veering far off into a certain extent produces snares:
“The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe.”
Proverbs 29:25
Now that we have this knowledge, we must however understand something else that God said.
“And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.”
Jeremiah 32:40
The one who fears God has nothing else to fear. On the other hand, the one who fears not God has much to fear. He becomes the hopeless victim of every fear and therefore a coward. Even the thief on the cross could not hide his shock at his fellow thief when his utterances were bordering on impugning Christ.
“But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? “
Luke 23:40
True faith possesses reverential fear. Reverential fear is the beginning of understanding. This is the work of God done in the heart of every true believer by the Holy Spirit and this reverential fear is permanent. This overlooked quality of faith unknown to many Christians is the proof of Divine election. Today, Christians can lie without bothering about the consequences of this sin. Again it is attributable to the lack of the fear of God.
Do you fear God? Does the mention of His name bring a certain reverential fear in your heart? How about His word? How about when you stand in His presence in worship?
“And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me forever, for the good of them, and of their children after them: And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn
away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.”
Jeremiah 32:39-40
True worship just like true faith is fearful. Today many young men and women have no fear in worship, right in the house of God, right in the middle of worship they do not mind facebooking, whatsapping, instagramming, or even watching pornography or chatting with girls or boys. Fear, true reverential fear that accompanies true faith is non-existent.
“But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.”
Psalm 5:7
God’s goodness is what leads us to true repentance, and when one has truly repented, he has a reverential fear of God. Wherever there is a genuine God-given faith, the believer delights in his faith being tested continually, not according to the opinions of men but according to the word of God. Submit yourself to the word of God. Examine yourself in the light of the word of God.
Is your faith sincere or feigned? Do you truly reverence God? Pray for the spirit of the fear of the Lord.
What a revelation! Sinning without bothering about the consequence of the sin is attributable to the lack of fear of God. A truly repentant heart has a reverential fear of God and will not willingly sin because of God's grace. True worship is accompanied with reverential fear of God. Lord, forgive me for the countless times my actions have shown lack of reverence for You. Fill me with the spirit of the fear of Lord.
